Development Tendency and Management Strategy in China¡¯s Peanut Market

China is the major country in peanut production and consumption in the world, also in the peanut trade. In the 21th century, China¡¯s entering of WTO will benefit China in the peanut export and also for the domestic consumption market.

  • China¡¯s peanut production and trade development tendency in the 21th century
  • With the continually increasing of the world population and the improvement people¡¯s living standard, the demand on the vegetable oils is increasing greatly in the international market. The China¡¯s demand tendency on the vegetable oil is basically accordant with that of the international market. At the present, the domestic production can only meet 80-90% of the consumption. As estimated, the demand on the peanut oil will increase in the international market in the future.

During the ¡°9th Five Year Plan ¡± period, China¡¯s average of annual peanut per unit yield ( kg/hectare) was 4%. By the year 2005, the per unit yield will be 3.62 ¨C3.74 tons and will be 4.19-4.44 tons in 2010. China¡¯s large population and the decreased planting area will not only depend on the increasing of planting area, but also the per unit yield. During the year 1990 to 1996, the average annual output increased 2.84 million tons than that of 1980¡¯s, of which 53.8% are depended on the increasing of the per unit yield.

  • After China¡¯s joining WTO, China¡¯s export of peanut will increase
  • China¡¯s entering of WTO will provide more opportunity in the international trade. Firstly, the world peanut trade will open to the China products, providing more opportunity and creating favorable conditions for the export to foreign countries. Secondly, the environment for the export will be improved and China will enjoy the non-discriminate trade treatment, reducing the cost for the peanut export. Thirdly, China¡¯s peanut price is competitive in the international market. It is estimated that after entering of WTO, the export of peanut will be increased in the volume, sales and variety.

  • Adjustment on the peanut sales management in the future
  • In order to reduce the risk on the peanut market after China¡¯s joining WTO, the local government should take the following 3 steps: Firstly, to adjust the planting structure and purify the variety distribution. Secondly, to increase the investment of the science and technology, mainly in the establishment for the complete system of Agricultural Science and Technology and Technical Extension. Thirdly, to enhance the development of ¡°contracted agriculture production¡±, directing the processing enterprise signing contract with farmers according to the demand of their production and sales.
