Jilin Rice Exports Rising
Information from Changchun Customs showed that during January to November 2002, the rice exports from Jilin Province were 73 thousand tons, 1.52 times more than that of 2001. The majority is exported to Korea by the border trade and from and to Japan through formal trade routes. The rice exported to Korea is accounting for a large proportion and increased rapidly. Although the export of rice from Jilin is increasing, the annual export volume is still minimal, only accounting for 1% of total provincial output. The sales market is mainly in Japan and Korea. It is still needs development into other markets.
Estimate of China¡¯s Wheat Output in 2003/2004
The latest report from China National Grain and Oil Information Center indicated that,in the year 2003/2004 China¡¯s wheat output will be 86.4 million tons, the fourth year with a reduced output.
As estimated, the average unit yield will be 3874 kg/ha, 1.95% higher than that of last year; the sowing area will be 22.3 million ha, reduced 5.11% from that of last year. In detail, the output of winter wheat will be 80.59 million tons, reduced 2.96% from that of last year. The average unit yield will be 3950 kg/ha, an increase of 2.25% and the sowing area will decrease to 20.4 million ha, 5.12% lower than that of last year. For spring wheat, the output will be 5.8 million tons, down 6.89% and the sowing area will reduced to 1.9 million ha.
Statistics from the US Department of Agriculture estimate that China¡¯s wheat output will be 92 million tons in the year 2002/2003.
Peanut Price Greatly Increased in Shandong
Information from Shandong Provincial Agriculture Office showed that since December 2002, the price of peanuts in Shandong has been going up and reached the highest point in the last 3 years.
At present in the Shandong market, the average price of double kernal peanuts was 3200 RMB/ton, 17.2% higher than that of last year. The price of oil crop peanuts was 3800 RMB/ton, 10.5% over that of last month and 34.2% more than that of last year. For exported peanuts, the average price was 5000 RMB/ton, increasing 12% over that of last month and 18% over that of last year.
The main reasons for the price increase is that the output of peanuts dropped in 2002 Shandong and Henan, the major peanut production regions.
