Export and Import of China¡¯s Grain and Oil Products in January-June 2003

In the first six months of 2003, the China¡¯s export and import of agricultural products have continually increased as compared with the previous year. The total value of import and export of agricultural products was 18.42 billion USD, increased 40.3% from the same period of 2002. Amongst that, the total value of export was 9.595 billion USD, increased 19% from the first half of 2002; and the total value of import was 8.826 billion USD, increased 74.14% from the first six months of 2002. The value of favorable balance on the international trade of agricultural products was 0.769 billion USD, a decrease of 74.3% from the same period of 2002.

The export of grain products increased significantly while the import of grain products decreased. The total export was more than the total import.

The total grain export in the first six months was 8.976 million metric ton (MMT), increased 87.1 % from the same period of 2002. Amongst that the export of rice was 1.136 MMT, an increase of 74.7% from 2002¡¯s same number; the export of corn was 6.694 MMT, an increase of 92.1% form 2002¡¯s same number; the export of wheat was 0.726 MMT, an increase of 79.7%.

The total import of grain products in the first six months of 2003 was 1.491 MMT, decreased 6.3% from 2002¡¯s same number. Amongst that the total import of rice was 0.177 MMT, increased 74.5%; the total import of wheat was 0.156 MMT, decreased 64.5% from 2002¡¯ same number; and the total import of barley was1.141 MMT, increased 11.3% from the same period of 2002.

Deducting the total import from the total export, the total net export of grain products in the first six months of 2003 was 7.845 MMT, increased 160% from the first six months of 2002. Amongst that the total net export of rice was 0.959 MMT, increased 70% from 2002¡¯s same number; the total net export of corn was 6.694 MMT, increased 90% from 2002¡¯s; the total net export of wheat was 0.57 MMT; and the net import of barley was 1.138 MMT, increased 10% from 2002¡¯ first six months.

The import of soybean and edible oil increased and the export of soybean and edible oil decreased.

The total import of oil seeds was 10.155 MMT in the first six months of 2003, increased 170% from the same period of 2002. Amongst that the import of soybean was about 10.15 MMT. The total export of oil seeds was 0.747 MMT, increased 23.2% from 2002¡¯ s same number. Amongst that the export of soybean was 0.1995 MMT that was similar to the export volume during the first six months in 2002.

The total import of edible vegetable oil was 1.979MMT in the first six months of 2003, increased more than 100% from 2002¡¯s importation during the same time. Amongst that, the import of soybean oil was 0.505 MMT, increased 590% from 2002¡¯s same number; the import of palm oil was 1.421 MMT, increased 67.41% from 2002¡¯s same number; the import of rapeseed oil was 38000 metric ton. The total export of vegetable oil was 24000 metric ton during the first half of 2003, which were mainly soybean oil and rapeseed oil.

During the first half of 2003 the top five provinces in China for exporting agricultural products are:

Shandong Province ¨C the total export of agricultural products was 2.298 billion USD, increased 30.7% from the first half of 2002;
Guangdong Province - the total export of agricultural products was 1.221 billion USD, increased 1.84% from the first half of 2002;
Zhejiang Province - the total export of agricultural products was 0.847 billion USD, increased 12.3% from the first half of 2002;
Fujian Province - the total export of agricultural products was 0.721 billion USD, increased 1.09% from the first half of 2002;
Liaoning Province - the total export of agricultural products was 0.687 billion USD, increased 11.95% from the first half of 2002.
