Potential in Fish Meal Market
Since August 2002, the price of China¡¯s imported fish meal began to decrease. In October, the price was reduced to 5000 RMB/ton and the monthly average price in China was 4942 RMB/ton. Since November, the price dropped greatly, 100-200 RMB/ton weekly.
Since December, the price of imported fish meal remained stable. The price was 4300-4400 RMB/ton in Shanghai Port with the lowest point of 4200 RMB/ton. In Huangpu Port, the price was 4250-4350 RMB/ton.
The favorable reasons for the price of imported fish meal increasing is that firstly, the price of soybean meal and lysine increased greatly recently. In some regions, the price of soybean meal has increased to 2400 RMB/ton and 23,500 RMB/ton for lysine. People have changed the feed formulation by increasing the contents of fish meal and reducing the soybean meal and lysine. Secondly, during the period of Chinese Spring Festival, the feed enterprises enhanced the production of feed.
The factor restraining the price increase is that there still is a large amount of fish meal stored, a total of 188 thousand tons by the end of November 2002.
