China Beef Export Wish to Increase

China is the big country of beef production in the world with the current output ranks the third in the world behind America and Brazil. But in the international trade of beef, China is insignificant in the world. The beef export only accounts for the 0.3% of it¡¯s total output and also 0.3% of in the world beef trade. That indicates that China has the potential for the beef export.

China¡¯s beef production increases promptly in recent 10 years with the output reached 5.33 million tons in the year 2000 from 1990¡¯s 1.26 million tons, 3.2 times increasing. While in the same period, the total output in the world had only increased 6.8%, from 55.7 million tons to 59.49 million tons. The percentage that China¡¯s output accounted for the world¡¯s total output had also increased from 2.3% to 9%.

Since 1990¡¯s, China¡¯s beef export began to reduce. The beef export decreased from the 1991¡¯s 196 thousand tons to 34 thousand tons in 2000 with the export value dropped from 313 million USD to 64 million USD. For the varieties, the fresh, chilled and frozen beef accounted for 98% of total beef export, mainly to Russia and Mid-Eastern Countries.

In a short period after China¡¯s joining to WTO, China¡¯s export of live cattle and beef had hardly increased because many advanced countries attended the intense competition with low price. China¡¯s live cattle and beef have the price advantage in the international market. But the contents of cellulose is higher than that of the western countries. China still has problems in the veterinary management system and animal sanitation standard, which affect the competitiveness of Chnese beef in the world market. The development of non-disease zone and non-polluted meet project is now undertaking to improve the quality, China¡¯s beef export has the promise of increasing.
