Feed Price Increased in China

Since June 2003, the price of raw material for feed is continuously going up in China, which indicated that the price of feed could increase in the future. The information from China¡¯s largest feed production company showed that, the price for the raw materials has greatly increased. Taking an example on June 12, 2003, the cost price for the raw materials is 1200 RMB/ton for corn, 2400 RMB/ton for soybean meal, 2800R MB/ton for corn protein, 950 RM/ton for rapeseed meal, 1500 RMB/ton for cottonseed meal and 1100 RMB/ton for wheat bran. While in May, the prices were 1160 RMB/ton for corn, 2250 RMB/ton for soybean meal, 2700 RMB/ton for corn protein, 850RMB/ton for rapeseed meal, 1350RMB/ton for cottonseed meal and 1040 RMB/ton for wheat bran. It is said that the prices for above products have been basically remaining stable, and some of them change at the range of 10-30RMB/ton.

The industry specialists think that the bad whether in this summer is the unfavorable factor for the growing of corn and wheat in North China. The SARS outbreaks in April and May limited the consumption of animal products. With the SARS has been controlled, the market demand on animal products significantly increased, in turn, it stimulates the livestock industry and the demand for feed products. The more demand on animal feed has pushed the market prices for feed materials going up.
