Sheep Breeding Industry Has Prosperous Prospect
The price of pork and poultry eggs has been fluctuating in recent years in China market, while the mutton price has been going up. Specialists indicates that in a long time in the future, the price of mutton will be continuously going up in the international market. China¡¯s entering of WTO brings an opportunity for its competition in the international market, especially the sheep and goats breeding industry.
Analysis showed that China¡¯s consumption of mutton has changed from North to South, from West to East. At present, China¡¯s per capita output of mutton is no more than 2kg, can not meet the demand. At present, the price of mutton in European countries and America is 5 to 10 times over that of China. China will involved in the international marketing competition by using its rich recourses, cutting down the cost and introducing foreign funds.
Gansu Become the Major Seeds Producer in China
Through years development, Gansu has become China¡¯s major seeds producer. Of total seeds it produced, the sowing area of corn seed is 938 thousand mu with the annual output of seed is 380 thousand tons, accounting for half of China¡¯s total seed production, ranking first in China market.
In 1996 the total seed sowing area was only 70 thousand mu, by the end of 2002 the total seed area reached 2.4 million mu, mainly dominated by crossing corn, other varieties is including potato, wheat, melon, vegetables and flowers.
At present, the breeding of seeds is more than 40 varieties, of which the seeds of corn, vegetable, melon and flowers is accounting for more than 90% of total seeds sowing area in the whole province. The seeds of cotton and forage grass has become a new focus in the seeding industry. Many foreign traders invested in Gansu and more than 20 seed processing line has come into being.
Fuxin Set Up Mutton Sheep Research and Development Center
A research and development center for the mutton sheep was recently set up in Fuxin, Liaoning province which is mainly engaged in the breeding of new varieties, extension of technologies and enlarge of breeding, taking an important role in the promotion of sheep industry in the area.
This center is located in the agricultural and technology zone in Fuxin city. The first period of construction is with the area of 7 mu, the sheep cots and storehouse of 2100 square meters. At present, it has already introduced Dorset ram of 4 head, Dorset ewe of 12 head, Suffolk ram of 2 head and Suffolk ewe of 4 head. Also it has introduced Hanyang of 121 head and Merino fine-wool of 3 head. It is planning to increase the inventory to 500 head by the end of this year.
In this center, it will introduce the advanced technology for the embryo transfer, breeding new varieties to meet the market demand. Also it will provide services for the technical training and instruction on the breeding, improvement and disease control and prevention.
Mutton and Beef Price Going Up in Beijing
In May 2003, the retailed price of beef has been going up and increased 4.55% than that of April when the price was 16.1 RMB/kg.
Between January and May, the price has been going up, the average price is 15.92 RMB/kg, much higher in general than that of last year, an increase of 21.56%. The mutton price is also increased; the retailed price for the born-in mutton was 16.08 RMB/kg, increased 4.42% and 7.2% respectively than that of last year and April. From January to May, the average price was 15.47 RMB/kg, 12% higher than that of last year.
For the reason of SARS, the transportation for the products has become the biggest problem. In Beijing, two-third of total mutton is usually supplied by Hebei, Tianjin and Inner Mongolia where the SARS was serious. The price is increasing for about 4.55%. From January to April, the inventories of beef and mutton were increased in Beijing. As estimated, the price for the beef will remain stable in the near future and the price for the mutton will increase slightly.
Corn Price Stable in Hebei
Since June 2003, the corn price began to going up after the continuous drops. At present in Qinhuangdao, the price for feed used grade 1 corn is 1050 RMB/ton, remained stable from early June. In Tangshan, the wholesale price for grade 1 corn is 1060 RMB/ton. In Langfang, the wholesale price of grade 2 corn is 1050 RMB/ton. For the purchasing price of grade 2 corn, it is 960 RMB/ton in Jize and 1060 RMB/ton in Xinji, increased 10-20 RMB/ton. In Shijiazhuang, the purchasing price of grade 2 corn is 1000 RMB/ton, same with that of June.
As estimated in late June and early July, the corn price will be stable or has a little increase.
