The Price of Animal Feed Increased in China Recently

From late August 2003, affected by the market price of soybean meal, the price of animal feed increased significantly. The market prices of soybean meal, cottonseed meal and lysine have already reached the highest level since 2000. The import fish meal, rapeseed meal, lysine, corn also increased in different extent.

Soybean Meal£ºIn October, with the influence of international market, the price of soybean meal raised quickly. On October 15 the price of soybean meal in Shandong was 3050 RMB yuan per ton, raised 940 RMB yuan as compared with the price on August 4, and increased about 44.5%. In Zhengzhou, the price of soybean meal was 3150 RMB yuan per ton, raised 970 RMB yuan as compared with the price on August 4, and increased about 44.5%. Just in one month, the price of soybean meal raised in such a big margin, which never happened in the last several years.

Cotton seed meal: Because of the rainy weather the yield of cotton in China is relatively low and in 2003. with the influence by the raising price of the soybean meal, the price of cottonseed meal also raised. On October 15, the price of cottonseed meal was 1700 RMB yuan per ton, increased 340 RMB yuan per ton as compared with the price on August 4, raised about 26.9%.

Lysine: With the influence of the international market and the raising price of soybean meal, the price of Lysine also raised. On October 15, the price of Lysine in Zhengzhou raised to 35 RMB yuan per kg, which was 14 RMB more than the price on August 4, or increased 66.7% in two months.

Imported fish meal: With the influence by the raising price of the soybean meal, the price of the imported fish meal increased 250 RMB between August 4 and October 15 and reached 5700 RMB yuan per ton in middle October. Because of the large stock of imported fish meal in different ports in China(more than 130 thousand tons), the supply of imported fish meal seems plenty.

The Consumption of Livestock Products has the Great Potential in China

According to the governmental officials from the livestock system, the growth of the consumption of livestock products in China is relatively slow at the present. However, there is some great potential for increasing the consumption of livestock products if you go through some detail numbers.

In rural area the average annual meat consumption (including pork, beef, mutton and goat meat) per rural resident in China is about 14.4 kg, while the average annual meat consumption per urban resident is 21.8 kg (18.5 kg of pork and 3.3 kg of beef, mutton and goat meat). The meat consumption amount of rural people is similar to the meat consumption amount of urban people in middle 1980s. If the rural residents consume more meat, which reaches to the consumption level of the urban residents in early 1990s, the total demand for the pork, beef, mutton and goat meat in China will increase 9-10 million ton.

The average dairy milk consumption per Chinese resident is less than 7 kg per year, that is equivalent to about 10-12% of the per person¡¯s dairy milk consumption of the world average. A small increase on consumption of dairy milk by each person will accumulate to a great volume of demand for dairy milk.

There are three major factors directly influence the demand of livestock products in China:

  • The increase of household income will lead more consumption of livestock products. If one resident consume 1 kg extra meat per year, the total meat demand in China will increase about 1.3 million ton.
  • The urbanization will significantly increase the consumption of livestock products.
  • The increase of population will need to consume more livestock products.
