¡¡The Consumption of Livestock Products has the Great Potential in China
According to the governmental officials from the livestock system, the growth of the consumption of livestock products in China is relatively slow at the present. However, there is some great potential for increasing the consumption of livestock products if you go through some detail numbers.
In rural area the average annual meat consumption (including pork, beef, mutton and goat meat) per rural resident in China is about 14.4 kg, while the average annual meat consumption per urban resident is 21.8 kg (18.5 kg of pork and 3.3 kg of beef, mutton and goat meat). The meat consumption amount of rural people is similar to the meat consumption amount of urban people in middle 1980s. If the rural residents consume more meat, which reaches to the consumption level of the urban residents in early 1990s, the total demand for the pork, beef, mutton and goat meat in China will increase 9-10 million ton.
The average dairy milk consumption per Chinese resident is less than 7 kg per year, that is equivalent to about 10-12% of the per person¡¯s dairy milk consumption of the world average. A small increase on consumption of dairy milk by each person will accumulate to a great volume of demand for dairy milk.
There are three major factors directly influence the demand of livestock products in China:
The increase of household income will lead more consumption of livestock products. If one resident consume 1 kg extra meat per year, the total meat demand in China will increase about 1.3 million ton.
The urbanization will significantly increase the consumption of livestock products.
The increase of population will need to consume more livestock products.
